How to create safe spaces to learn and grow

Roz Duffy (USA)

Many of us work in environments that claim to be “creative” — where our colleagues expect us to bring inspired and original ideas to the table every day. Often these environments aren’t safe spaces to be honest, to fail without shame, and to truly be ourselves.

If you aren’t getting what you need from your workspace, it’s time to design your own safe space. Establish a communal environment for people with shared goals, and create the opportunity to guess, experiment, fail, and learn from each other. With the support and encouragement of your new community, you’ll go to places you never imagined. You don’t need permission, you can start where you are. Right now. Learn how to create a safe space by:

  • Asking others to join you on your adventure and keep you accountable.
  • Accepting yourself as you are and letting yourself grow.
  • Challenging your fears and resistance to change as you learn from your new-found peers.
