Deconstructing your excuses

portrait of Caroline Moore

Caroline Moore (USA)

One reason we hold back from taking risks is our fear of breaking social norms like, “you can’t just do that,” and, “this is the way we’ve always done things.” It takes audacity—the boldness to take risks—to build your career and life on your terms. Audacity isn’t something you’re born with, it’s a behaviour you can learn. It’s scary to expose yourself to failure, put your authentic self out in the world, and own your goals. You don’t have to wait for someone to give you a job before you make something.

Learn from the “do it yourself” mantra of punk, where bands record music and promote their work on their own, without the help of the establishment. Learn to:

  • Make decisions consciously. Reframe your situation as a set of decisions that you’re actively making, instead of circumstances that happen to you.
  • Move past, “I can’t,” and get specific about what’s really holding you back. If you assume that you could achieve your dream, what steps would you take to make it happen?
  • Use failure to make you braver. With every mistake you make, you learn something for next time.
